The Thermal Biology Institute is committed to providing training to
university undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students. TBI also provides
educational opportunities for teachers and the general public.
For Teachers! Join us and bring the excitement of Thermal Biology science
back to your classroom. This summer TBI offer’s Thermal Biology in
Yellowstone National Park through the Master of Science in Science Education
Program at Montana State University.
Thermal Biology in Yellowstone National Park
June 18-22nd 2007
This 2-credit course is designed for teachers participating in the Master’s
in Science of Science of Science Education (MSSE) program at Montana State
University. It will provide a survey of the ecology of important organisms
common in thermal habitats of Yellowstone National Park, including a review
of different life forms and their modes of metabolism, and the physical and
chemical habitats that define their environment. The course is structured to
provide (1) necessary fundamentals for understanding the ecology of different
life forms in thermal habitats, (2) a survey of measurement and observational
techniques that may serve as applications appropriate for science educators,
and (3) field trips to visit and characterize several geothermal habitats environments.
Fundamental principles of microbial ecology will be emphasized during morning
lectures on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Methods of chemical, physical
and biological analyses will be emphasized during the laboratory component
(afternoons). Two days of field trips (Monday and Friday) will be used to visit,
discuss, sample and characterize diverse geothermal habitats in Yellowstone
National Park. More Course Information
For Adult Learners! Join us for a unique field experience
in Yellowstone National Park! The Thermal Biology Institute is teaching Living
on the edge: Making a living in Yellowstone Thermal Environments through
the Yellowstone Institute. This three-day field course provides an exciting
opportunity to learn more about life in the thermal basins. Participants stay
at the Mammoth Hotel in Yellowstone, and join TBI faculty and staff each day
for hands-on learning adventure.
Life on the edge: Making a living in Yellowstone’s
geothermal
environments. YAI Field Seminar
! ! ! This class is offered every other summer,
and will be offered again, summer
2008
Do the words Chemolithotrophy, PCR, and Sulfolobus make you
scratch your head? Join the staff of the Thermal Biology Institute to learn
more about Yellowstone’s unique high-temperature systems and increase
your vocabulary at the same time! After a classroom-style introduction, the
course will continue with field trips into the Park (Norris and Upper Geyser
Basins, Mud Volcano) where you will study thermophilic diversity first-hand.
TBI faculty will share specific expertise about microbes that make their living
eating arsenic and sulfur; viruses that live in boiling battery acid; and thermotolerant
plants that survive in soil temperatures over 120° F! Class discussion
will include biomedical applications of Yellowstone microbes and possible microbial
links to life on other planets.
We will meet in the Mammoth area at 9 a.m. on the first day and wrap up around 3
p.m. on the last day. Expect moderate hiking. To this: This class
targets the general public that has an interest in science and Yellowstone’s
geothermal environments. Expect moderate hiking off and on boardwalk each day.
The class will begin the Friday evening June 9th and wrap up at 3 pm on Sunday
June 11th.
