Geyser Earth Science - Predicting Riverside’s next eruption. Geysers of Yellowstone National Park

Lesson plan by John Graves, modified by TBI
6-8
GOAL Understanding that the eruption of predictable geysers, like Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park, is dependent on two variables: the duration of the previous eruption and the interval between eruptions. Using actual eruption data from Riverside geyser, students create a prediction model exactly like the one used by rangers in Yellowstone to inform visitors of the next eruption of predictable geysers.

oscillotoria

Life Science - Let’s Get Small. Scale and measuring

Lesson plan by Kim Popham, Length: 2-3 55 minute class periods

6-8
GOAL Students will understand that organisms that are microscopic have structure and can be visualized by using the appropriate scale. Scientists use microns and nanometers to measure microscopic organisms. Students can make models to different scales by using mathematical techniques.

Photosynthesis

Life Science - Photosynthesis and Respiration of Microscopic Life

Lesson plan Vernier Biology with Computers adapted by the Thermal Biology Institute

6-8
GOAL Students will understand the relationship between a variety of living photosynthetic organisms and oxygen production and consumption. Using technology to gather, graph and interpret data, students will be exposed to instrumentation that is used in science research.

Batik

Life Sciences and Art - Batiking Yellowstone: Using art to interpret Science!

Lesson plan by Thermal Biology Institute

6-8
GOAL Understanding that Yellowstone National Park is a unique and dynamic ever changing system that is fueled by a continental hot spot. Life in the region is dependent on the chemistry and heat generated by the hot spot. We can interpret this nature beauty through the art of batik.

Tree of Life

Life Science - It’s All About What’s Inside. Classification and the Tree of Life

Lesson plan by Deb Williams

6-8
GOAL Understand that the access to more information has allowed us to better understand the relationships of living organisms based on the shared genetic material. As a consequence, scientists are in the process of re-organizing how they classify organisms.
